The Power of Self-Help: Discovering the Key to Personal Transformation

Of all the things to change, the only one you have control over is yourself. While I don’t want to delve too deeply into the motivational aspect just yet, it’s a simple fact that transformation must come from within. Reading the quote, “Self-help is the best help,” during my school years prompted me to reflect on what we truly need help with. I ask this question to my younger self, now housed in a 20-year-old body: we often need our own help more than that of others.

Engaging in the lives of others can feel meaningless when you have ample free time and nothing pressing to do. You might get a fleeting dose of dopamine, only to return to your "usual self." Even Sundays can feel boring, leaving us to wonder what there is in life to pursue. One intriguing question to ponder is: who is your usual self, and what prompts change?

The "usual self" is who you are when you wake up each morning—it's a fresh slate, where the day unfolds with its ups and downs. However, the theory of the usual self being most evident in the morning might be subjective, as our sleep cycles vary widely. This usual self often serves to motivate or assist us through fatigue or confusion, leading us to rely on our instincts, distract ourselves, forget, overthink, or simply let time pass. Ultimately, we might turn to others or seek solace in faith to navigate our challenges.

To regain our usual selves, we need a set of self-help strategies. It's essential to find ways to reconnect with who we truly are.
